Introduction

Deborah has extensive advocacy experience in the Crown and Divisional Courts as well as the Court of Appeal being the senior female barrister in practice in the Teesside area.

Her experience in criminal law encompasses both prosecution and defence work involving charges of murder, serious sexual offences (both recent and historic), child abuse (both physical and sexual) and drug trafficking. She is authorised to sit as a Recorder in serious sexual offences trials in the Crown Court (one of only two non-silk Recorders to be so authorised in the North East Circuit) and has been trained by the Judicial Studies Board in respect of these types of allegation.

Defendants represented have included young offenders accused of the most serious of violent and sexual crimes and women accused of such offences. Deborah has also been instructed in cases involving ethnic minority issues.

Prosecutions have included involvement in the leading 'shaken babies' case considered by the Court of Appeal.

Recent involvement in prosecution involving allegations of making explosives/possession of unlawful firearms.

She also has significant experience in other areas including Local Authority and Government Agency prosecutions, Court Martial (received training from the Ministry of Defence in London), Informant cases, undercover operations and public interest immunity.

R v Faulder and Others - shaken babies case

R v McCabe - Money laundering

R v Tarirah - date rape drugs/alcohol/consent in sexual cases

R v S - 10 year old defendant accused of assault and indecency with 4 year old

R v I'Anson - explosives/firearms

R v Crossling - repeated sexual offences over many years
